August 20, 2012 at 10:44 am (12 years ago)I just bought 2 pairs of Tom’s for my daughter because she had said that she liked them. But when I brought them home she told me that I had bought the wrong ones and that the ones that I bought (plain black canvas and black glitter canvas) were not the eco-friendly ones. As it turns out, the insole is made of pigskin leather, and leather is not an eco-friendly product by anyone’s definition.
The other materials in the shoe are eco-friendly (but that is canceled out by the addition of leather to the insole). The good news is that Tom’s does carry a vegan, completely eco-friendly line. However, the selection is limited and does not include the plain black canvas or black glitter… So, all in all, I am very disappointed in this company. It’s wonderful that they donate shoes to the needy… but this company needs to go “ALL the way” to ECO-FRIENDLY… not just half the way…
For anyone who is just learning about environmentalism and what it means to be eco-friendly… animal agriculture is the BIGGEST pollutant to our soil and waterways, so to truly be an eco-friendly product, that product can not contain materials from the slaughter industry.
