Del Mar Racetrack 2012 Guide

by

Headed to the races this summer?  The last thing you want to do is get stuck in the horrible traffic, usually even the off ramp at Via De La Valle backed up!  Not to mention the price just to park is $10 or $20 to valet.  Instead consider taking the train or the coaster to the Solana Beach Station.  From there you can jump on the free shuttle to the track.  The Del Mar Racetrack Shuttle runs every 15 minutes from the Solana Beach Station to the track.  The shuttle begins at 9:30 am and continues to meet incoming trains and Coasters until 4:30 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Returning to the Solana Beach Station from the track departs 15 minutes after each race.  The last shuttle leaves the track 45 minutes after the end of the last race except on Saturday because of the concert the last shuttle is at 10 p.m.  For more information on the free shuttle from the Solana Beach Station click here.

I know everyone loves going to opening day… the hats alone are sometimes worth it.  BUT did you know tickets are more than double on opening day?  The least expensive tickets are $4 but on opening day the price jumps to $10 or for Clubhouse seats which are normally $6, go up to $15.  If you are planning on going to the track on opening day be aware they are expecting record-breaking crowds with this being the 75th year.

Become a Del Mar Diamond Club Member!!!!  It is free to sign up and the benefits are incredible.  For instance there is this little thing called Free and Easy Wednesdays!  Every Wednesday (except Opening Day), receive FREE Stretch Run Admission, FREE Program and FREE Seat along with HALF PRICE Beer (domestic drafts), Sodas and Hot Dogs at Stretch Run Concession Stands.  Just the half price on beer is worth being a member!  Also general admission tickets and clubhouse admission is half price when you are a member, so what are you waiting for?  For complete Diamond Club Member details click here.

Visit the track on Thursday and purchase the Oggi’s Pizza N’ Ponies Special offer.  For only $11.00, patrons will receive: Stretch Run admission and program ($6.00), Stretch Run reserved seat ($5.00), Oggi’s Personal Cheese Pizza ($8.00), Soft Drink ($3.00) – A $22.00 VALUE, FOR ONLY $11.00 DOLLARS* –50% Savings.  Stop by your local Oggi’s Pizza and pick up a coupon for this great deal!

The only other deal I found on tickets it is $39 for 10 clubhouse admission tickets, EXPIRES on 7/18/12.

Good luck at the races!

Getting to the Del Mar Racetrack

by

Traffic in Southern California is brutal in the summer, we have Fiesta Del Sol, Del Mar Fair, Comic Con, the Del Mar Racetrack and many more!  If at all possible we always try to take the Coaster to these events.  Not only will you be able to enjoy getting there (as you can drink on the coaster) but you won’t get stuck in horrible traffic.  Parking at the Del Mar Racetrack is $10 for general parking or $20 for valet which in my opinion is well worth it.

If you can take the Coaster or the Amtrak (local commuter) trains, the trains stop at the nearby Solana Beach station. Del Mar provides a free shuttle (Double Decker buses) to and from the track.  Get off at the Solana Beach station and look for the free double-decker buses.  The free shuttle runs about every 15 minutes see below for more details:

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, *Saturday, Sunday:

  • Shuttle service begins from the Solana Station at 9:31am to meet Train #564, and continues to meet incoming Trains/Coasters until 4:35pm
  • Service returning to the Solana Station from the racetrack departs promptly 15 minutes after each race. (Please note, the races do not always run on time, therefore you must adjust you departure from the races to make your Train/Coaster schedule).
  • Last shuttle leaves the racetrack 45 minutes after the end of the last race. On the Saturdays that the Racetrack hosts a concert, shuttle service ends at 10 p.m.

Friday:

  • Shuttle service begins from the Solana Station at 11:49am to meet Train #768, and continues to meet incoming Trains/Coasters until 7:00pm.
  • Service returning to the Solana Station from the racetrack departs promptly 15 minutes after each race. (Please note, the races do not always run on time, therefore you must adjust you departure from the races to make your Train/Coaster schedule).
  • Last shuttle leaves the racetrack at 10pm.

*Hot* Del Mar Summer Concerts Series – 4-o-clock Fridays!

by

In 1994 Del Mar brought the funk to Fridays with free concerts. Over the years the free Summer Concert Series has attracted the likes of Cake, Weezer, ZZ Top, Billy Idol, Devo, Gnarls Barkley, Ziggy Marley, Matisyahu, Violent Femmes and Jason Mraz, but in 2001 a singer/songwriter/surfer named Jack Johnson put Del Mar on the musical map (or was it the other way around)?  I was lucky enough to be at that concert in 2001, and Jack Johnson was incredible.  It was however more than a little crowded, if you can I would find a place to watch before the races are over.  This year the line-up is incredible!  You can see Ben Harper, Steel Pulse & The Offspring!

All 12 performances of the Del Mar Summer Concert Series are free for fans attending the races. If you plan to only attend the concerts and plan to attend a few I would recommend the $29 for Del Mar Summer Concert Series Pass.   Pass includes 10 Clubhouse tickets to the racetrack & all twelve shows in the Summer Concert Series.  Attend all season long, or share tickets with friends!  The Seaside Stage is a non-smoking venue. For Friday shows, as is the case with attending the races, patrons under 18-years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The Saturday shows are 18-years of age and up ONLY.  Following the last race, concert prices are $20. No reserved seats, standing room only so get here early. Concert starts after the races.

This is a hot deal at $29 for Del Mar Summer Concert Series Pass ($100 Value).  Pass includes 10 Clubhouse tickets to the racetrack & all twelve shows in the Summer Concert Series.  Attend all season long, or share tickets with friends!

7/20: Wavves
8/3:   Steel Pulse
8/4:   Cake
8/18: Ben Harper
8/31: Ozomatli
9/5: Party in the Paddock w/ TBD
All concerts will be held at the Seaside Stage. The improved venue offers better sight lines, the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop and better access to concert-goer services and amenities.
