Parenting – Ever have one of those days?

by

Ever have one of those days?  Your child didn’t sleep last night, so you are running on two hours of sleep. The one thing that will save you…your coffee, hot, caffeine filled coffee, only to find out you are out of coffee.  While you searching in the pantry for anything that could be considered coffee you hear a loud crash followed by scream.  You drop the coffee you just found, coffee grounds go everywhere, run towards the now crying child and find this (see below) your child covered in cheerios and milk.  How did this happen, like really how?  Is this my life?  When did that happen?  It is one of those things you don’t think about, but every stage as a parent we are worried about different things.

Baby – Bring baby home from hospital, now what?  Then you start worrying if they are still breathing, I can’t tell you how many times I got up in the middle of the night the first few weeks to check my child was breathing.  Yes, just breathing!  Mind you there is no reason my child would stop breathing, he had no respiratory issues, he was born full term, and completely healthy.  But I just kept checking, and checking, he was fine and never stopped breathing by the way.

Toddler – When your baby starts walking it is so amazing, you are so excited for those first few steps.  Like it truly is the most amazing thing you have ever seen and life could not be any more perfect than at that moment.  Unfortunately for me my child started walking at 9 months, cause he just wasnt content to just ‘t crawl.  For him crawling was just what he did until he could reach something to pull himself up on.  When your child starts to walk they fall, a lot.  So much so that your child will have bumps and bruises all over their body, and sometimes on their face.  You wonder if people think you gave your child that black eye, then you think screw them, and while you are thinking this your child just fell and bumped their head…again!

Preschooler – Your child can walk and talk and may even be potty trained, points to you if you did this before your child turned 3.  The scariest thing that happens at this point is they run off in a parking lot, or in a park or pretty much anywhere.  The other thing you start to worry about is silence.  Why don’t I hear anything?  Silence at this age means they are into something, something they know they shouldn’t be into. Has everyone seen video of the two boys who played with paint?  Google it, and be happy that it never happened to you.

School Age – Congratulations you made it to the first day of kindergarten!  You are excited for your child, also a little excited to have a little me time.  What you don’t know before this is how many different types of diets children have, unless your child has one.  No joke one child in my son’s class could not eat gluten, peanuts, or any nuts, anything with fructose and something else.  I just felt so horrible because I didn’t want to exclude a little boy who had enough restrictions, how do I bring in something with no gluten, nuts, or sugar?  In the end you learn there are things children with food allergies can eat.

We all have had one of those days because we are parents.  In the end we learn to enjoy those bad days because it makes us realize how special all the other days are.  Today for instance we are cuddled up on the couch watching Goonies = good day!

New Years Eve at Legoland California is fun for children and parents.  We enjoy taking our son to Legoland during the day as “Midnight” comes early.   Midnight for families celebrating the new year together at Legoland can do so without missing their bedtimes. Legoland re-creates the Times Square ball drop with a giant LEGO brick falling 22 feet in the air, Grammy-nominated artists and special celebrity guest who will lead the countdown for San Diego’s largest Kids’ New Year’s Eve Party!

Join in the festivities with party hats and special glasses for viewing fireworks. The party concludes just in time for our countdown at 6 p.m. with a fireworks display illuminating the sky and providing a great ending to an amazing year.

There is still time to enjoy Legoland Snow days where you can build a snowman with lego accessories and throw real snowballs at colorful targets. Ride snow tubes down a hill, and brand new this year, Ice Skating!  My son loves the snow tubes, he could spend all day doing just that!  Witness the lighting of a 30-foot tall LEGO Christmas Tree and enjoy live entertainment with the Brickettes. Holiday Travel Tips with kids

by

The holidays are here and most of us are traveling to see family, some of us on airplanes some of us just a car ride away.  How ever you are traveling this holiday season we want to make it a little bit easier for you!

If traveling by airplane:

  1. Traveling with a child in a carseat please note the carseat must go by the window seat as a FAA regulation.
  2. Only one lap child is allowed per row, because there are only 4 masks that drop down in case of emergency.
  3. Most booster seats are not approved by the FAA for use during travel, recommended to check them or leave before entering the plane.
  4. If you are going to check a carseat, put inside a duffel bag or ask for a plastic bag, you do not want to put your baby back into a dirty carseat.

One item not to leave home without is a sippy cup, all of us moms know this.  What we recommend is bringing an empty sippy cup so you may fill it with whatever the child needs either on the road or in the air.  Having to put juice in a sippy cup that had milk in it isn’t going to go over too well, save yourself the hassle and carry and extra munchkin sippy cup with you.

  1. Not all airlines carry milk, so purchase a small container after going through security.
  2. If your child is bottle fed ask for a bottle (actually it’s usually a can) of water to mix the formula for take off.
  3. Children should be sucking on breast, bottle or sippy cup on take off and landing to help their ears open.

Air travel with children is difficult to say it mildly, being prepared is everything.  Although children may think a long trip (by car or plane) is not their idea of fun, follow a few tips and they will be happy, yes happy!  Number one tip for any parent who has a child with a tablet, if that tablet powers out life as you know it will not be the same.  ALWAYS CHARGE DEVICES BEFORE YOU LEAVE, AND DON’T FORGET THE PLUG, this will make the trip more enjoyable.

We didn’t have a tablet when my child was little (1-4 years old) and what worked best for us was offering a new toy every half hour of the ride if he was good.  I went to the dollar store spent $10 and wrapped the gifts, it was perfect.  If he was good every 30 minutes he would receive a new gift, he was good the entire 5 hour flight at two years old!  The items don’t need to be big or fancy just something so they are excited for the next present and will behave.  This will work well for travel by plane or car.

What to dress your child in:

  1. Always bring a change of clothes for your child regardless of their age, one spill and your child shows up a big mess to Christmas Eve dinner.
  2. If traveling by plane dress your child (if walking) in a bright color, if they run off it is a lot easier to say did you see the kid in orange running by?
  3. Children old enough to have must have toys are also old enough to carry them, my son usually travels with a backpack and roller bag with only his items inside.

Taking snacks is mandatory, we love mum mums because they are in individual packages and very easy to travel with.  Another reason we love them is the snacks don’t make a huge mess. Mum Mums are also perfect for children of all ages, my second grader loves the elementary school ones and my Godson at 18 months loves the toddler ones.  Being able to hand your child a snack and not have to worry about it going everywhere makes life better for everyone involved.  Speaking of snacks if you have more than one child you know they may want something different from one another.  Check out the munchkin snack tower, fit up to three different snacks in an easy to transport container.
