Valentine’s Day Treats

by

Valentine’s Day treats are so fun to make, especially with little ones, my son and his friend helped make these treats.  Items needed for these treats are:

  • 1 box Oreos (we used Trader Joe’s) Traders has a gluten-free option for these cookies as well
  • 2 bags of Candy Melts
  • 2 to 3 different Valentine’s sprinkles
  • 30 Lollipop sticks
  • Wrappers  and ties if you are giving them out

Candy melts made by Wilton are great for making tons of different types of candy.  The most important part of this recipe is to not over cook the candy in the microwave, it we be ruined if you over cook or melt rather.

  1. Microwave for 1 minute on  50% power
  2. Remove from microwave and stir (which will be minimal at this point)
  3. Microwave for 30 seconds at 50% power
  4. Remove from microwave and stir
  5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 until tit is smooth
valentine treats
  1. Carefully remove one half of the cookie
  2. Use stick to remove some of filling so stick will lay flat in the filling
  3. Add melted chocolate over the stick and filling to reconnect cookie
  4. Let cookies set for 10 minutes so the chocolate and cookie are reconnected completely otherwise cookie will fall apart
valentine treats
  1. Dip both sides of the cookies so completely covered in chocolate
  2. Wipe excess off of the one side (not the side you are going to use sprinkles on)
  3. Dip into sprinkles
  4. Set aside on wax paper for an hour or two until firm to the touch

If you are planning on passing these out in your child’s class I would recommend using the treat bags and twist ties.  Very inexpensive the 50 treat bags cost $1.99 and the twist ties $.99 both from Michael’s.  The chocolates were on sale from $3.99 to $1.99 this week also at Michael’s, the sprinkles I got at Target for a few dollars.

The finished treats!  Since it is before Valentine’s Day I brought these into my mom’s chemo nurses’ today and they loved them, I plan on making them again and bringing to my son’s class.  Something to note Traders has a gluten-free option for these cookies, which is great because my son’s class has a couple of children who need this option.  I love that Trader’s has made it that much easier to make these treats for everyone in his class.

Oreo Eyeballs – Items Needed to Make:

  • Oreo Cookies
  • Sticks
  • White chocolate chips
  • Red Frosting
  • Blue Frosting
  • Black Frosting
  • Wax Paper

Twist oreos apart and put stick into the frosting in the middle, it is best to let this set for a while (20 minutes) before attempting to dip in melted chocolate as it may slip off. Melt white chocolate chips (we use microwave in 30 second increments) dip oreos into the melted chocolate. Make sure you cover the entire cookie, set aside to harden (can be put in freezer to speed it up) After chocolate has hardened and is firm to the touch use the blue frosting and make a big circle in the middle of the cookie, then take the black frosting and put a dot on the blue circle. Next use the red frosting to draw the veins on the eyes.

Pretzel Broomsticks – Items Needed to Make:

  • Pretzel sticks
  • Plastic bags
  • Halloween Ribbon
  • Halloween Pencils

Put the pretzels into the plastic bags and insert pencil into the middle of the bag, use the ribbon to tie it closed.

Pumpkin Rice Crispy Treats – Items Needed to Make:

  • Rice Crisp Cereal
  • Marshmallows
  • Orange Food Coloring
  • Green Frosting
  • Mini Rolos
  • Wax Paper

Make rice crispy treats as usual (recipe can be found on the back of the cereal box) add orange food coloring to desired color. Wet your hands and shape into pumpkins. Add mini rolo for the stem, and use the green frosting to add leaves.

Easter Treats to make with Kids

by

Easter Egg Nests

It is a cloudy day here in SoCal today, which is why I decided what a perfect day to make treats with the kids! I usually host Easter brunch for my family and friends on Easter Sunday, sad I won’t be able to do that this year as I’m sure everyone is. We are all in this together, these are fun to make with the kids. I love-making Easter Egg Nests, not only are they adorable but they are ridiculously delicious as well. Items needed to make these are marshmallows, butter, vanilla, and dry chow mein noodles, and small candies for the eggs.

4 Cups Dry Chow Mein Noodles
3 Cups Mini Marshmallows
3 Tbsp Butter
1/2 Tsp Vanilla
Candy Eggs, Mini Robin’s Eggs, M & M’s, or Jelly Beans

Line a cookie sheet with wax paper. Over low heat, melt the marshmallows and butter in a large saucepan, once melted stir in the vanilla. Pour the noodles into a large bowl. Pour the marshmallow and butter mixture over the noodles, stir until well coated. Rub some butter on your hands, this is important as it will all stick to your hands and not together. Then take the noodle mixture and form it into small round bowls in-between the size of a golf ball and tennis ball. Place the balls on the cookie sheet, with the back of a spoon, press the center of each ball to make a hollow indentation. Next let the nests set until they are hard and then fill each nest with candy eggs.

Last year my son and I make enough for all the children in his class. The year before I made them for place settings on Easter Sunday. I took a tooth pick and small piece of paper and wrote everyone’s name and placed at each setting on the table. No one had to get up for something sweet after the meal! Tell me what you choose to do with your nests!
